根據美國國務院的資料，1870年11月5日有一艘英國船Despatch在台灣府(Taiwamfoo)失事，(註1) 另外有資料顯示Despatch是一艘供應船(Tender)，排水量167噸、淨重96噸，
船長119呎、寬21呎、深10呎。(註2) 但達飛聲的書中及其他資料都沒有提到此船。
根據勞氏船級社1869年的資料，Despatch號排水量576噸，為一艘90匹馬力的鐵殼蒸汽暗輪船(Screw Steam)，船身長217呎4吋、寬25呎1吋、深14呎5吋，1855年在Shields的Smith船廠建造，
船長是Carline、船東是W.H’tehusn，船籍港設在Hull。(註3)
(圖說) 英國暗輪船Despatch號進入台江內海到台灣府一定會先經過經過安平古堡，它在兩年前才因?樟腦戰爭」被英國砲艦轟垮。
