The Great Creator: Capitan Yao
Capitan Yao was the Creative Director of the Taiwan and China Pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and the Concept Creative Director of the Tech Worlds (TW) Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo. Such achievements are arguably unique in Taiwan. To achieve this, one must possess a comprehensive understanding of thematic strategy and narrative, spatial design and planning, facility engineering and new technology R&D, business operations and finance, and possess practical operational experience.
Yao initially worked as a creative in advertising commercial films, later becoming a film director. He then moved from CF Production into the museum, exhibition, and theme park sectors, where he began working in venue planning, design, and exhibition production, consistently embracing a creative path. Yao's ability to seamlessly integrate painting, writing, music, photography, performing arts, digital and mechanical technologies has enabled him to serve as the creative director of numerous major international projects. Yao is good at storytelling. He is also a
Youtuber and
Podcaster .
Yao not only possesses a background in the cultural and creative arts but also serves as a project leader in technology R&D teams. He has leveraged government science and technology grants to develop new technologies and products, securing patents and marketing them internationally under the YAOX5D brand, including products like the 720-degree spherical theater and the 4D special effects cinema system.
Furthermore, Yao possesses a background in academic research and the ability to demonstrate his expertise in exhibiting content, rather than simply being a curator. This is a rare skill in the industry and a key factor in his success in the museum market. Yao’s academic field focuses on maritime history related to Taiwan, and he is currently a doctoral student at the Institute of History at Tsinghua University.
Taiwan's biggest lack is talent with cross-platform capabilities. Although Taiwan is known for its technology manufacturing industry, its integration with applications and human-computer interfaces, especially the entertainment experience industry, is poor. In the future, it must shift its focus from engineering to cross-platform capabilities.
